Background

The long-term safety and serviceability of concrete structure should be considered in its life cycle, including planning, designing, construction, management and maintenance. It is essential to consider strength, deformation and durability of concrete structure in the design procedure. However, a large proportion of Taiwan's engineering practice only considers strength and neglect deformation and durability, in other words, we only discuss structure’s design strength and neglect effects caused by shrinkage & creep, both of which have a huge impact on safety and serviceability of structures.

After comparing Taiwan’s shrinkage & creep data to foreign data, we discovered several obvious differences, such as the composition of mix design proportion, material characteristics and weather conditions. We realized that we can’t apply foreign prediction models unless certain modifications were adapted. For the reasons mentioned above, this research collects shrinkage & creep data from the past 4 decades and present a modified prediction model that is suitable for Taiwan’s concrete that can be easily used by scholars and engineers.
